The 16-day Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek begins with a short and picturesque flight from the historic city of Kathmandu to Bhadrapur. Upon arrival at Bhadrapur Airport, you will meet the rest of our team and embark on a 10-hour drive to Taplejung. Along the way, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the Tea Garden, countryside, and majestic snow-capped peaks such as Kanchenjunga and Makalu. The following day, you will start your trek on foot, traversing rugged trails to reach your ultimate destination. After reaching Taplejung, the journey continues to Tembewa (1835m) on the first day of this thrilling adventure. The trail takes you through off-the-beaten paths, lush green valleys, and vibrant local villages, offering a glimpse into the traditional lives of the Rai and Limbu peoples in the eastern part of Nepal. The route includes scenic landscapes, passing through Suketar (2420m), Deurali (2600m), descending to Lalikharka (2265m), and finally arriving at Tabewa (1835m).

During the second day of the incredible Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek, you will journey from Tabewa (1835m) to Khesewa (2120m). The trek commences with an ascent to the hilltop, followed by a descent to Simba Village (1845m). After crossing the Phawa Khola River, you will ascend to the next village, Kujari (1700m). Continuing, you will eventually reach Gurung Village at Kade Bhanjyang (2129m). Finally, you will ascend and descend to Kheswa (2120m). Along this trail, you will have the opportunity to witness the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga, as well as Kyabru (7412m) and Janna (7710m).

After departing from Khesewa, our next destination is Mamank (1785m), which can be reached after a 6- to 7-hour journey through the river valley. Along the way, you will be captivated by the enchanting waterfall, lush green valley, local villages, and breathtaking scenic views along the lesser-explored trekking trail. As you continue, you will pass through the verdant valley and make your way to the Himalayan moraine, encountering challenging trails, local villages, and yak pastures such as Yamphudin (2080m), Tortong (2995m), Anda Phedi (3370m), Tseram (3870m), Yalung Bara (3900m), Lapsang (4432m), and Ramche (4580m). These places offer basic accommodation and food for trekkers. Ramche will be your final stop before reaching the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek. From there, you will embark on a hike to Oktang (4730m) to witness the majestic mountain views along the glacier. This will mark the end of your journey, and you will retrace your steps back to Taplejung and Bhadrapur before finally returning to Kathmandu by flight. Kanchenjunga South Trekking Permits Fees and Documents

To embark on the unspoiled Kanchenjunga Trail, you will need three specific permits. These permits include the Restricted Areas Permit (RAP), Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP), and Trekkers Information Management System Card (TIMS), all of which must be obtained in Kathmandu before commencing the trek. On this day of the Kanchengunja South Trek, our trekking expedition begins a journey from Taplejung to Tembawa. The first stage of the trail moderately follows the unfinished dirt road along a rhododendron filled hill known as Surke danda (2580m). At the top of the ridge, a side trail branches north in the direction of the well-regarded Pathibhara temple. Afterward, the journey descends to Lali Kharka (1880m) along the breathtaking forest,

After mountain breakfast and packing, our plan to reach Khesewa overnight from Lali Kharka takes nearly 6 to 7 hours. Trek Stat from Lali kharka, the trail contentious descending through terrace fields to Tembawa (1880m). So, Such a Beautiful Limbu Village, then from Tembawa up to the ridge, and then drop down steeply through the villages of Shimu and Pokara, respectively. Afterward, the trail crosses the suspension bridge at Pawa Khola (1430m) and climbs to the next village called Kunjari (1700m). Sinchebu Bhanjyang (2240m) in Gurung village has several bhattis, and you will catch the first snowy caps of Kanchenjunga and Kyabru (7412m). Look out for the peg-like summit of Jannu (Khumbakarna: 7710m) to the west of the main ridge. Continue over the pass into the valley of the Kabeli Khola, then turn left and descend below the ridge to the village of Khesewa (1960 m), where we goanna stay overnight.

On the sixth day of the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek, from Khesewa we are heading to Phumphe Danda, which takes 5 hours. The trail began to descend to the waterfall and Nadewa Khola, then Yangpang, where we found some tea shops. The path climbs through forests past a large waterfall and ridge at 1850m. After a 30-minute walk, we will reach Phumphe (1780m). Stay overnight in this beautiful place.

Continue to descend the trail, past a rice terrace, to a sinuous suspension bridge over the Khaksewa Khola at 1540m. At the end of the trail, irritation climbs to Mamanke (1780m). This is a prosperous Limbu village that offers teahouses. Then we are heading to Yamphudin from Mamank, it takes 3 to 4 hours, one of the short days during the excursion. Heading north along the Kabeli Khola, start climbing to the ridge and slowly descend to gushing steam, crossing the river. After the ups and downs, we will reach Kabeli Khola and follow the west bank upstream to Yamphudin (1690m). Stay overnight at the tea house.

Another short day starts after breakfast in Yamphuding. This is a diverse village of Gurung, Rai, Limbu and Sherpa peoples. You may be asked to register your TIMS (Trekker’s Information Management System) card at the police post and show your conservation permit at the Kanchenjunga Conservation areas check post. Start the day by crossing to the east bank on inventing bridge and began the steep climb between the Amji Khola and Kabeli Khola ridge. The journey lead by terrace fields to Darachuk and continues to climb to Dhupi Bhajyang (2540m). Afterward trail graduals descend through Forest to Amji Khola(2340m). This is a diverse village of Gurung, Rai, Limbu and Sherpa peoples. You may be asked to register your TIMS (Trekker’s Information Management System) card at the police post and show your conservation permit at the Kanchenjunga Conservation areas check post. Start the day by crossing to the east bank on inventing bridge and began the steep climb between the Amji Khola and Kabeli Khola ridge. The journey leads by terrace fields to Darachuk and continues to climb to Dhupi Bhajyang (2540m). Afterward trail graduals descend through Forest to Amji Khola(2340m). Stay overnight at Amji Khola on the seventh day of Kanchenjunga South Trek.

From Tarontan, we climb steeply uphill through the rocky trail. The Journey starts in forests of mixed rhododendrons then climbs over the scars of landslides to an isolated pasture at Tsento Kang (3360m). The continuous trip along with forest and mountains between the trees on the skyline is breathtaking. After past, another pasture – Watha (3370m) trip continuous for an hour’s to a cave shrine decorated with prayer flags. In the holy cave areas killing the body is extremely prohibited. Trek leading us uphill to the much crosser to the vantage point of white mountain peaks and grassy meadow to Tseram (3870 m). Stay overnight at Teahouse.

Today is a special day for the Kanchenjunga South Trek. We are reaching our destination point, known as Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (4620 m), within a 2/3 hour walk from Tseram. The trail began with a treeline to Mirgin La above a Mani wall at 4040m, an alpine meadow slope up the valley towards the peaks of Rathoung (6678m) and Kubru Dome (6700m). We are now inside the mountain, close to glaciers in the alpine meadow. The trail passes through Yalung Glacier to a yak pasture at Yalung Bara (4260m). To finish the day, keep climbing to Lapsang Lake (4430m) and continue to the flat Himalayan moraine valley into the Ramche (4620m). Stay overnight at the teahouse.

From Ramche, it is the time to descend towards Tortong. We will walk down the same trail that we have ventured on earlier until Tsheran. Then, the trail runs over the ridge where hemlock trees accompany for a short time. The ravine then appears at Yamgachha Khola that marks the further way ahead. The trail goes through the idyllic forests covered by juniper, larch and rhododendron trees through the Anda Phedi, which is one of the rewarding stops to engage in the natural vivacity for a while. This interesting ride puts a halt when we arrive at Tortong after long hours.

It is a pleasant day with clear views of Jannu peak in the skyline. The trail descends and ascends several times through the river valleys and deep ravines until making an appearance at Yamphudin. When we reach Lasiya Bhanjhyang, the hospitality shown by the Sherpa family is truly commendable. They seem to be very humble and diligent. Many campers wish to pitch their tent in this region, but the limited water supply discourages many groups to camp here. The waterfalls and following rocky stairs truly inspire to conquer great things ahead. There is a beautiful monastery at the Yamphuddin that remains closed most of the time.

The track from Yamphudin to Khebang is quite strange. Most of the time, we will have to walk along the unhabituated region where barely there are any settlements to see. There are several ascends that you may not have expected at this altitude. It is indeed a strenuous task to conquer those uphills. There are various stone steps to cross. By the time, we arrive close to the Khebang, the agricultural farm fields begin to appear.

From Khebang, the trail goes along the pleasant forest fenced by the prayer flags and chortens on both sides. It is a colorful day as you get to encounter many monasteries and temples on the way, which are adorned with vibrant colors. In the radius of a few kilometers, there is a Pathivara Temple which is considered to be one of the holiest temples of the Hindus. Once we arrive at the Kamdime, we can catch a short walk around the village.

Finally, we will catch a drive back to Birtamod along the same trail that we have ventured on earlier. It is a pleasant drive, along with the tea gardens and paddy fields fencing the highway. Upon arriving in Birtamod, we will check in to our hotel, where we will spend our overnight.
