According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna mentioned the significance of Damodar Kunda and the importance of taking a bath in this sacred lake. It is believed that by bathing in this lake, one can cleanse themselves of their sins. As a result, this lake holds great religious significance for Hindus, Buddhists, and others who believe in its power. Every year, on August Full Moon Day, a special fair is held at Damodar Kunda, attracting many local people who come to visit and take a holy bath. The Upper Mustang Damodar Trek begins with a journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara by tourist bus, followed by a flight or jeep ride to Jomsom, the headquarters of the Mustang district. From Jomsom, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, marking the starting point of this remarkable trek.

Discover the wonders of the lower Mustang, including Jomsom, Kagbeni, Muktinath Temple, and the breathtaking Kali Gandaki Lush Valley. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the heavenly villages, temples, stupas, monument sites, monasteries, and the majestic green and white peaks that surround you. Experience the rich ancient culture and civilization that thrive in the Lower Mustang before embarking on your journey to the Upper Mustang. Kagbeni serves as the gateway to the Upper Mustang Trek, where you will need to obtain special restricted permits before venturing into the upper region of Mustang. Traverse through Chhuksang, Chele, Samar, Syanbochen, Ghiling, Ghami, and Charang, and finally reach Lo-Manthang, the capital of the Lo-Kingdom. Take a day to explore Lo-Manthang and witness the beauty of Choser and the Tibet Board. From there, prepare for the Damodar Kunda trek, which takes you to one of the remote wilderness areas of the Mustang Region. Camping will be required for this part of the journey.

Embark on the off-the-beaten-path adventure to Damodar Kunda, passing through Yara and Ghuma Thanti. Spend a full day at Damodar Kunda, where you will be mesmerized by the stunning views of the white mountains, pristine lake, and monasteries. Return to Jomsom, taking in the mysterious glimpses of Gumba, lush valleys, and charming villages along the way. The trail will lead you through Ghuma Thanti, Yara, Tange, Tetang, and Kagbeni. Your Damodar Kunda trek will conclude in Kathmandu. The best time to visit Upper Mustang is from March to November. However, the month of May is particularly special as it is when the Tiji Festival takes place. This festival is the main event in the region, attracting people from Tibet and beyond to participate and celebrate. Additionally, visiting during the rainy season can be a unique experience, as the region receives less rainfall compared to other areas. Upper Mustang offers an alternative destination for those who wish to explore during the rainy season.

Upper Mustang Damodar Kunda Trek Requires Permits

Travelers embarking on the Upper Mustang Damodar Trek must secure a special permit along with a mandatory conservation area permit. The initial permit costs $500 for a 10-day period, with an additional charge of $50 per day once the initial permit expires. It is crucial to remember that the permit is only valid for 10 days, commencing and concluding in Kagbeni. Entry into the restricted Upper Mustang region without a permit is strictly forbidden, as foreigners were not permitted to enter prior to 1992. Moreover, certain areas in Mustang fall under the jurisdiction of ACAP, necessitating a permit from the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). Notably, a restricted area permit can only be obtained if there are a minimum of two individuals traveling together, with solo travelers ineligible for the permit.

Which season is the most ideal for the Upper Mustang Damodar Kunda Trek?

The Upper Mustang region is situated in the rain shadow area beyond the Annapurna ranges on the Tibetan plateau. Except for winter (December to February), all other seasons are suitable for trekking in the Upper Mustang. Similar to the best trekking seasons in Nepal, autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) are considered the optimal times for the Upper Mustang trek. The majority of the trek takes place on flat terrain, although the trail itself is dusty and unpaved. It is essential to be well-prepared for the dusty conditions, intense sun, and strong Himalayan dry winds. Once you enter Jomsom, you will be walking in a desert-like environment on mostly flat terrain, occasionally encountering narrow paths and high passes. The Upper Mustang Trek is classified as a moderate-level trek, but it does require a certain level of physical fitness and good health conditions, as you will be walking approximately 15km each day.

How to Preserve from Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS):

During the Upper Mustang Damodar Kunda Trek, the risk of mountain sickness is minimal, but it is essential to be proactive in preventing this issue. These services can be obtained separately at an additional expense. Please be aware that you have the option to avail yourself of these amenities by paying an extra fee.

  • Drinking water:Hydration is essential for all trekking and adventure journeys to prevent mountain sickness. In the context of Upper Mustang Trekking, it is recommended to drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily. There are various options to access clean water during your expedition, including using filters or purification tablets for spring water. Alternatively, you can buy bottled water or boil water for consumption. If you desire hot water, remember to bring appropriate containers. The price of a one-liter bottle can vary from Rs 150 to Rs 350, depending on the altitude.
  • Hot Shower: It's important to get a good night's sleep to recharge after a long day of hiking, and a refreshing shower can help with that. Unfortunately, hot showers are not part of the package, but they are available at most teahouses and homestays nearby for an additional fee. These showers are powered by either gas or solar energy. As you begin your Manaslu Circuit Trek, you can enjoy a hot shower at a reasonable cost. The price per person per shower typically ranges from Rs. 200 to Rs. 400. It's a good idea to have some Nepali currency on hand to cover the cost of this service.
  • WiFi and reception: While embarking on the Upper Mustang Trek, you will have access to wifi at all teahouses. In locations with good reception, you can opt for a local SIM card with data, except for specific areas. Nevertheless, if you choose to utilize the teahouse wifi, there will be a charge of Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 per teahouse. It is important to note that internet service may not be available during unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Laundry Service: When embarking on a lengthy journey, utilizing the laundry service can be an excellent way to reduce the number of belongings you have to pack. In areas with mountains, there are laundry services offered at a reasonable cost, but you also have the choice to wash your clothes yourself. To do this, make sure to bring washing powder or soap and clean your daily-use items. Afterwards, hang them near a wood fire or on the balcony of the tea house, utilizing the wind to ensure they dry quickly overnight.
  • Charging Facility: Throughout the Upper Mustang Trek, a charging facility will be at your disposal for all your electronic devices. The hydroelectricity service provided throughout the entire journey guarantees the availability of necessary amenities. Moreover, each tea house is equipped with multiple outlets to cater to your convenience. This ensures that you are well-prepared for any unexpected situations, such as adverse weather conditions or power outages.

Tipping Culture:

Tipping is a common practice in the tourism industry in Nepal. When utilizing airport transportation services, it is customary to leave a tip for the driver. Similarly, when dining for lunch or dinner, it is expected to show appreciation by leaving a tip for the staff. This practice also applies to trekking guides, tour guides, climbing guides, and porters. The amount of the tip is discretionary and should reflect your satisfaction with the service received.
