Manaslu Trekking offers an opportunity to explore the hidden Shangri-La of the Manaslu region situated between the Annapurna Conservation Area and Langtang National Park. Known for its stunning scenery, the trek, also called the Manaslu Round Trek or Manaslu Base Camp Trek, starts at Manchhekhola, next to the Budi Gandaki River. Each village, from lower to higher elevations, offers a unique and rich cultural experience. The 14-day Manaslu Circuit Budget Trek starts with a scenic drive from the historic Kathmandu, beginning with a public bus ride. The route takes travelers through various villages along the Trishuli River, arriving at Malekhu Bazar before crossing a bridge at Trishuli River. The journey continues to Dhading Besi, the district headquarters of Dhading. Following this, the drive extends through the countryside to Arughat Bazar. From Arughat Bazar, the trek proceeds northward along the Budhi Gandaki River until reaching Machhe Khola, where the Manaslu Circuit Trek officially begins on foot. The Manaslu Circuit trek traditionally commenced in Arughat; however, with improved transportation options, many trekkers now opt to begin their journey from Machhe Khola. This choice allows them to avoid the noise of vehicles and the dusty paths. At the checkpoint, your guide will check in your permit for the Manaslu Conservation Area, marking the beginning of an unforgettable journey on foot alongside the Budi Gandaki River. As you navigate the narrow river valley, you will encounter breathtaking local villages, magnificent waterfalls, and the warmth of the local community, where friendly residents will greet you with smiles.

The journey from Machhe Khola to Jagat spans 20 kilometers and typically takes between 6 to 7 hours. This route leads you through Khorlabeshi (970m), Tatopani (980m), Dobhan (1070m), and Yaruphant (1170m), all while following the breathtaking Budi Gandaki Valley. Along the way, you will experience subtropical climates, diverse flora and fauna, and dramatic cliffs, as well as cross several suspension bridges. Upon reaching Jagat (1340m), you will need to obtain special Chumnubri Restricted Permits to enter Demang. These permits require the involvement of a local company and a minimum of two trekkers in your group. After checking in with the restricted permit, you will venture into one of the most protected cultural and natural areas within the Manaslu conservation region. The trek continues along a classic route, navigating rugged and narrow paths that pass through various cultural villages, including Salleri (1353m) and Sirdibash (1420m). You will cross the Budi Gandaki River to reach Philim (1570m) and then proceed along a gradual path to New Bridge via Ekle Bhatti (1600m), where you can admire stunning waterfalls. Each step of this journey presents an opportunity to capture unforgettable photographs. The New Bridge connects two trails: Tsum Valley on the right and the Manaslu Circuit Trek on the left. As we follow the Manaslu Circuit Trek, we will continue along the trail towards Larky La, crossing the suspension bridge and trekking to Deng (1860m) via Nyak Phedi.

Each day, the trail becomes increasingly wild and less traversed, featuring narrow paths and rugged terrain. You will need to carry approximately 20 kg for 6 to 7 hours daily, which requires good stamina and a reasonable level of fitness. The Manaslu trek takes you from Deng to Namrung (2630m), passing through Rana (1910m), Bhi Phedi (1990m), Bihi (2130m), Prok (2397m), and Ghap. During this segment, you will ascend the trail and delve deeper into the Manaslu region, experiencing changes in climate, flora, and fauna, while enjoying views of the Siring Himal and Ganesh Himal. From Namrung, you will explore the Himalayan landscapes, Tibetan villages, ancient monasteries, and breathtaking vistas of Himchuli, Manaslu, Manaslu North, Naike Peak, Buddha Himal, and more. You can visit the Kandjur Scripts Monastery in Lho and trek for an hour through pine woodlands to Shyala, which offers stunning views of the Manaslu range. Shyala village is one of the most enchanting locations, providing panoramic views of Manaslu and its neighboring peaks, along with ancient monasteries.

From Shyala, you can trek to Pungen Gompa (4200m), situated at the base of Manaslu (8163m), which offers spectacular views. Next, you will trek to Sama Gaon, the largest Tibetan village, which features various hiking trails, including Birendra Lake and Manaslu Base Camp (4800m). Afterward, you will continue to Smado village (3690m) and hike to the hilltop for acclimatization. The trek will then lead you to Dharmasala (4450m) before summiting the Larkya La Pass (5106m), which provides unparalleled views of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. The descent will take you to Bhimtang, a picturesque village that offers breathtaking glimpses of the Himalayas, glaciers, and moraines. Finally, you will continue your trek to Dharapani, where Nepal's most beautiful trek concludes, followed by a drive back to Kathmandu or Pokhara.

The Manaslu Conservation Area, renowned for its extensive protection, showcases a rich diversity of flora and fauna. As you embark on the Manaslu Circuit Trek, you will have the opportunity to observe some of these remarkable species. The lower segments of the trail are adorned with vibrant forests of rhododendrons, oak, and bamboo, while the higher elevations are characterized by alpine and sub-alpine plant life. Along the way, you may encounter domesticated animals such as buffalo, cows, yaks, horses, donkeys, and goats. With a bit of luck, you might also spot mountain goats. Additionally, the area is home to various bird species, including the globally threatened Red-headed Vulture (Sarcogyps calves) and the near-threatened Himalayan Griffon (Gyps himalayensis), Lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus), Satyr Tragopan (Tragopan satyr), and River Lapwing (Vanellus duvaucelii). Two other nationally threatened species you may encounter are the Ibisbill (Ibidorhyncha struthersii) and the Eurasian Eagle Owl (Bubo bengalensis).

Additional Info

Manaslu Circuit Trek Season:

Similar to other trekking routes in Nepal, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is best undertaken during the optimal seasons of Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May). During these peak periods, the weather is generally stable, with pleasant temperatures ideal for trekking and mountaineering. Rainfall is minimal, and the likelihood of snowfall is quite low. While trekking in December and August is possible, the weather tends to be unpredictable; however, you may encounter fewer crowds on the trails. The rainy season (June to August) and winter months (December to February) are regarded as the off-season for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. During these times, weather conditions are often unfavorable and unstable. In winter, heavy snowfall can obstruct trails, increasing the risk of avalanches and resulting in very cold temperatures. Conversely, the rainy season brings wet and slippery trails, with potential landslides and poor visibility.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Check List/ Packing List:

  • Essential Gear: Prepare a backpack or daypack (30L), Remember to bring a 2-3-liter water bottle, trekking poles, a water purification method, and a sleeping bag with a liner (consider a -15-degree capacity for winter treks).
  • Headwear: To protect yourself from the sun, you can choose between a sun hat or a scarf. In colder climates, it is recommended to wear a winter hat or a wind-brimmed hat that is designed to shield you from the winter elements. Additionally, it's always wise to carry a headlight with spare batteries to ensure you have adequate lighting for the emergency case and during the Thorong La Pass.
  • Face Protectors: When it comes to safeguarding your skin, don't forget to include sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and face and body wipes in your daily routine. These items play a vital role in shielding your skin from harmful UV rays and keeping it clean and refreshed.
  • Handwear: Lightweight gloves offer comfort and flexibility, whereas heavyweight winter gloves provide superior insulation for extremely cold conditions(only recommend for winter)
  • Body Requirements: For a pleasant hiking experience, it is important to have the appropriate clothing. This includes hiking shirts made of synthetic fiber, long-sleeved shirts, a hooded rain jacket, a fleece jacket, lightweight cotton pants, polypropylene underwear, a down jacket (Just for winter treks), and waterproof jackets and pants.
  • Footwear: The footwear options include waterproof hiking boots, thick wool socks, and sports shoes or sandals for relaxation during trek-off time.
  • Toiletries: When going hiking, make sure to pack a fast-drying towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper, soap, shower gel, washing powder, nail clippers, and a compact mirror.
  • Rain Protection: When preparing for rain, it is important to remember to bring windproof gear in addition to rain protection. This includes rain jackets or ponchos and bag covers.
