Biodiversity Chitwan National Park represents Nepal's inaugural national park, harboring a diverse array of indigenous flora and fauna. Situated in the lowlands of Nepal within the Chitwan District, it was founded in 1973 as the Royal Chitwan National Park and later designated as a World Heritage Site in 1984. Encompassing an expanse of 952.63 square kilometers (367.81 square miles), the park spans elevations ranging from 100 meters to 815 meters. Noteworthy inhabitants of Chitwan National Park include 68 mammal species, 544 bird species, 56 herpetofauna species, and 126 fish species. The park is particularly renowned for its conservation efforts towards the One-Horned Rhinoceros, Royal Bengal Tiger, and Gharial Crocodile. Chitwan National Park boasts a wealth of vegetation. Sal trees dominate the southern aspect of Churia Hill, interspersed with Chir Pine. On the northern slopes, Sal trees coexist with smaller tree and shrub species like Beleric, rosewood, axe-wood, elephant apple, grey downy balsam, and climbing plants such as Bauhinia vahilli and Spatholobus.
Approximately 20% of the park's area is covered by Terai-Duar Savanna and grasslands, hosting over 50 species, including towering grasses like Saccharum Ravenna (elephant grass), giant cane, Khagra reed, and various true grass species. The diverse vegetation within Chitwan National Park provides a habitat for over 700 wildlife species, as well as an unquantified number of butterflies, moths, and insects. Chitwan Safari Tour Best Season
The Chitwan safari tour is a great option to consider throughout the year, thanks to its favorable location and lower elevation. However, we highly recommend visiting Chitwan from late September to May to avoid the heavy monsoon rains that occur between mid-June and mid-August. During this period, Nepal experiences about 80 percent of its annual rainfall. For pleasant temperatures around 30°C, the best time to visit Chitwan is from October to early March. If you can tolerate the heat, April and May are ideal as they mark the end of the dry season when wildlife congregates around waterholes. Be prepared for scorching temperatures in the mid 43°Cs during this time. January is the coldest month, with temperatures dropping close to freezing at night. While there is high humidity from late November until the monsoon season, November, December, and January offer excellent visibility and clear views of the majestic Himalayas. However, at other times, the view may be obscured by haze and pollution caused by traffic, industry, brick kilns, and waste burning. Overall, the Chitwan safari tour promises an unforgettable experience, and by choosing the right time to visit, you can make the most of your adventure.
