Gods, goddesses, and demons were doing the ocean mining to excavate elixirs and good things needed for the universe. Suddenly during the mining process poison came out and started to destroy the universe. It started to engulf an entire universe. Therefore, gods and demons cried for help from Lord Shiva. To save the universe, Lord Shiva drank all poison himself and kept it in his neck. So, Lord Shiva is also called as the Neelkantha (Blue Necked). He couldn’t bear the pain so he threw his trident on the rocks and thus came out water that filled the Lake. Travelers can see the water source in the nearby rocks located on the shores of the lake.
