All you need to know about Nepal’s new solo-trekking ban
The Nepal Government and Tourism Board have introduced new regulations for trekking to improve safety and promote sustainable adventure tourism in Nepal. Previously, trekkers would trek on their own, leading to unsafe travel conditions such as getting lost, encountering illnesses, and facing challenges related to high altitudes. To address this issue, the new rules require every trekker and adventure enthusiast to use the services of a local travel company, as well as hire a guide and porter for their safety and convenience. Additionally, this initiative supports the local economy by aiding local entrepreneurs, trekking guides, and porters. Ultimately, these measures aim to promote sustainable trekking tourism in Nepal.
Individual trekkers are not permitted in Nepal's National Parks and Conservation Areas starting from April 1, 2023.
The Nepal Tourism Board, responsible for promoting tourism in the country, announced on March 3rd, 2023. After consulting with key players in the tourism industry, the board decided to ban individual trekkers from April 1st, 2023. According to Mani R. Lamichhane, the director of the board, the ban aims to improve the safety of trekking in Nepal and create more job opportunities within the nation.
